About the Book
The Hugging Trees are real and live in our neighborhood here in Ames, Iowa. Inspired by their unique bond, I wrote a story as a Christmas present to my granddaughters Katelyn and Maggie when they were eight and six years old, respectively. I wanted them to know that on their own they can do great things but there will be times when they could use some help, support, or a word of encouragement.
Remember then that your sister is forever there for you. It is at those times of need that the unconditional love and support from each other will make you unstoppable! After reading the story that Christmas morning, my family members encouraged me to share The Hugging Trees story with everyone.

About the Author and the Illustrator
The author Hank Kohler, born in 1952, grew up on a family farm in northwest Iowa. He has a degree in Education from the University of Northern Iowa but became a restaurant owner—not a teacher—during his working years.
Mr. Kohler enjoys spending as much time as possible on lakes and rivers and was the recipient of the 2016 Olav Smedal Conservation Award sponsored by the Ames, Iowa Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. He has written two stories published by Iowa Outdoors. “Rocks in the River” and “The Ice Shack”. Mr. Kohler lives in Ames with his wife Anne. They have three children: a son Andy and daughters Robyn and Kerry. The Hugging Trees is the author’s second book. His first, One4Water, was published with Hog Press in 2022.
The illustrator Travis Kohler is an artist, designer, and teacher who loves bringing creative ideas to life. He has been teaching art and graphic design for more than twelve years, helping students explore their imaginations through colors, shapes, and stories.
Travis studied Visual Communications–Illustration and Art Education, and he enjoys working with everything from paints and pencils to digital tools. When he’s not making art or teaching, Travis loves spending time with his wife, Alana, and their two dogs, Boris and Myrtle.
