About the Book and the Author

A book of poetry by the Poet of the oVary (from the self-description by the author, see below):

Sitting by the Mississippi today with the wind blowing on me, I’ve just had two poems get born in the last eleven minutes. I dictated them into my notes app. This is an exact and perfect example why years ago, it came to me on an open mic poetry stage in the underground coffeeshop of a place in Seoul South Korea that I am not just Anne McGee Tibbitts, but I am the poet of the Ovary.

A women’s ovaries, when she’s born, contain all the eggs she’ll ever need. And that’s how it is with me: my poems were born inside me, and at various times of my life they’ve chosen to get born—whether I was ready or not. Being a very fertile poet has not been easy. Sometimes, I’d be driving and have to pull over to write on paper—before the gift of a Notes App in a smart phone! Or, I’d be at the library tutoring a student and say “excuse me” and run to the red IBM Selectric to let a poem come forth. It’s like the poems—so many, almost all—have just dropped right through me, and though it was my fingers typing them out or dictating them to text, I didn’t strain to make up the words, to form the poems.

That’s why I call myself the poet of the oVary. I don’t wake up and make coffee and sit at a desk with a typewriter, a keyboard, a sharpened bunch of pencils or my favorite ballpoint and then just wait and wait for a word or an idea. My poems get born whole through me, like children from the Universe.
